Notes:Because children under the age of five are almost one and a half times as likely to die in a home fire as the average person, the National Fire Protection Association created the Learn Not to Burn® Preschool Program in 1991. We are currently revising the lesson plans to be taught by preschool teachers and the home link activities that go home to parents and caregivers. The Learn Not to Burn Preschool songs and recordings by Jim Post have also been updated. Singer and musician Dante Ware joins Jim in singing and performing many of the songs. The recordings are free to download along with the lesson plans. The Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program lessons are most appropriate for 4- and 5-year-old children, but they are also appropriate for children in kindergarten. The second download link is to MP3 files.; Contact information: NFPA , 1 Batterymarch Park, Quincy, Massachusetts, USA 02169-7471 Phone: (617) 984-7486 See also fillable contact page at: http://www.firesprinklerinitiative.org/newsletter/contact.aspx

Subjects:1. CHILDREN 2. HOME FIRE SAFETY
Series Data:Focus on fire safety
Notes:Young children are not able to sense danger in the same way as adults. They have a very limited ability to react quickly and properly in an emergency situation as well as little control over their environment. This increases their risk of death and injury in a fire.; Keep matches, lighters and other items used for ignition in a secured drawer or cabinet out of the reach of children. Teach your children to tell you when they find matches and lighters. Always dress children in pajamas that meet Federal flammability standards. Avoid dressing children for sleep in loose-fitting, 100% cotton garments, such as oversized t-shirts. Teach children not to hide from firefighters, but to get out quickly and call for help from another location. Show children how to crawl low on the floor, below the smoke, to get out of the house and stay out. Demonstrate how to stop, drop to the ground, and roll if clothes catch fire. Develop and practice a home fire drill and designate a meeting place outside. Familiarize children with the sound of your smoke alarm. Replace mattresses made prior to the 2007 Federal Mattress Flammability Standard. Check under beds and in closets for burnt matches, evidence your child is playing with fire.; Contact information: Online form available at: https://apps.usfa.fema.gov/feedback/

Summary/abstract:
  • CHILDREN AND FIRE SAFETY Do you know that children under age 5 are twice as likely as the rest of us to die in a home fire? Children depend on their parents and other caregivers to protect them. Here’s what you can do to keep children safe from home fires: Keep matches and lighters out of their reach, maintain a working smoke alarm on every level of your home, and practice a fire escape plan. Pick a meeting spot outside of the home. Remember: get out and stay out. This message is brought to you by the United States Fire Administration, your local fire department and this radio station.station.

Notes:Ember911 is a program designed to teach safety strategies to all children. Often children with autism or related disorders react in a less than ideal way to emergency situations. These individuals have been known to hide, act out violently, or simply shut down. Research shows that children with autism learn best through visual representations of words. Social stories can help depict scenarios that an individual may find difficult or scary. Ember911 contains both specialized visual effects and a variety of social stories embedded into the basic safety scripts so that a child with autism can better relate to the topic at hand. ALL children should have the proper tools in knowing what to do in case of an emergency. Ember911 not only helps to educate children on safety, but also provides an entertaining means in which to learn these critical skills.; Contact Information: Ember911, Inc, PO Box 404, Momence, IL 60954; Phone: 815-669-7300; Email: ember911@gmail.com

Notes:The “Freddie” curriculum is a comprehensive fire safety curriculum developed to teach children in kindergarten through fifth grades important fire prevention and survival skills. The series consists of three curricula, one for kindergarten and first grades, one for second and third grades, and another for fourth and fifth grades. Participating students are learning positive fire safety behaviors that will extend into adulthood. Fire safety behaviors learned through the “Freddie” curriculum have already been attributed to saving lives. Not only do these lessons benefit now, but also behaviors learned will ultimately have a favorable long-range impact on the fire problem in South Carolina. Since the inception of the “Freddie” curriculum during the 1993-94 school year, fire deaths among elementary school aged children continue to decrease as reflected on the following page.; Each curriculum contains six lesson plans with a video highlighting each lesson. Pre-and Post Tests, along with teacher evaluations are also a part of the curriculum administration. Student materials for all grade levels consist of student workbook, certificate of completion, and badges/stickers for each pupil. In addition to the standard format, student materials have been converted into an audio format for children with visual and other print impairments. The K-1st grade materials have been adapted to teach children with autism, and a Spanish translation of the student activity book for Kindergarten through third grade is also available.; Office of State Fire Marshal, South Carolina Division of Fire and Life Safety, 141 Monticello Trail, Columbia, SC 29203.
