| Summary/abstract: | - The effectiveness of the Oklahoma City Fire Department's fire cause determinations had not been verified. This research purpose was to examine the effectiveness of the department in fire cause determination. A descriptive methodology was utilized to identify effectiveness in determining fire cause. Surveys, data analysis, and interviews answered the following questions: What training is provided by the Oklahoma City Fire Department in cause determination? How do similar size cities determine the cause of fire in their departments? How effective is the Oklahoma City Fire Department in cause determination? Results showed that determining fire cause was consistent across jurisdictions, but to insure effectiveness, changes were needed. Implementing Standard Operating Procedures, standardized training, developing performance goals and improving data bases was recommended.
